"Just looking." I muttered, still looking out over the water.


"Yup." Said the man, still eyeing his book. "Still water's real interestin' to a young lad such as yourself."

Whatever I'd expected from the old gentleman, it certainly hadn't been a helping of sass.

"I know what you're thinkin'. I seen people with that look. Pulled em' out of the water the next morning."

 

I lowered my eyes, didn't look at him.

 

"You planning on trying to stop me?"

"You can't help those that don't want help son. Learned that after I failed to stop the seventh."

"Seven!?"

 

The man merely passed his book over to me, notioning for me to read. He'd left the first page open, clearly intending for me to start at the very begining.
